Vulnerable apps and ransomware: again

It’s been a particularly troubling week for cyber security incidents.

PodPoint is the UK’s largest domestic car charging provider and now owned by EDF Energy. More than 140,000 of their users could have had their data put at risk after a security vulnerability was identified. Researchers have suggested that names, addresses and charging history (showing car usage patterns) could be revealed.

In the same week, the Labour Party confirmed it has been affected by a ‘cyber incident’ involving its members’ data. At the time of writing, the details were still emerging, but it’s possible this is yet another ransomware attack.

In the next Technology Insight we will be looking at ransomware attacks, and signposting you to some free resources from the National Cyber Security Centre. I hope you have RDP and offline backups taken care of? More next time.
