FCC recommends an end to TikTok app

Brendan Carr, the commissioner of the FCC (Federal Communications Commission), has called upon the CEOs of Apple and Google to remove TikTok from their app stores. In a recent blog, Mr Carr cites concerned of how TikTok uses personal data, and the closeness to the Chinese government, as reasons.

As it applies to charities, the issue is larger than a particular provider. Fundraisers will understandably be keen to leverage all possible platforms for communicating their charities impact, and asking for support. But every new platform needs to be carefully considered; even if they are not a processor (as normally in this case), your endorsement should not be given without some due diligence. We would recommend:

  • Undertake a DPIA
  • Carefully check the terms and conditions
  • Involve your Tech team and your DPO
