Smartphone face recognition may be fooled with printed photos

According to a recent survey in Which? magazine online, “40% of smartphones tested at Which? labs since August 2022 have face recognition that can be spoofed with a 2D printed photo, allowing criminals to easily gain access to the phone.”

We all know that security and convenience are opposing aims, and facial recognition is certainly convenient. But Which? found that for 19 of the 48 handsets they tested, a 2D printed picture of the person was good enough to unlock the phone. You can read the Which? article here for more information on the phones affected https://www.which.co.uk/news/article/face-recognition-mobile-phones-axNDM2P9VvyO.

Your data or IT security policy should be clear on how mobile and other devices are to be secured. For work devices there is software that can help, but where a person is using their own device for work use, extra precautions need to be in place.
