Background to the principles

The UK GDPR is based on seven key principles:

  • Lawfulness, fairness and transparency
  • Purpose limitation
  • Data minimisation
  • Accuracy
  • Storage limitation
  • Integrity and confidentiality (security)
  • Accountability

These principles must lie at the centre of your approach to data protection, and you must be able to demonstrate compliance with each one of them.

We will examine each of the UK GDPR principles, and by the end of this sectionyou will be able to:

  • List the UK GDPR principles
  • Explain the meaning of each principle
  • Give examples of how each principle might be demonstrated
