We are often asked about the use of social media apps for charity business, and the use of personal devices, and the data protection implications.
This topic came to light again in the week when BBC Tech reported that Morgan Stanley had been fined £5.4 million by Ofgem after traders were found to have discussed business on their private smartphones.
Whilst the fines were made under rules designed to prevent insider trading, rather than data protection, it does remind us that the use of personal devices and social media apps not designed for business use, can be problematic.
We know that ‘Bring Your Own Device’ can save significant amounts of money, and social media apps are very convenient, but cost savings and convenience can be at the expense of data protection.
If you are in this situation, then the minimum you should do is conduct a DPIA and have written policies and procedures, underpinned by training and subject to regular review.
