Microsoft has stated that support for Windows 10 will end in October 2025. Yes, we know it’s two years away but there is an important issue now.
It is estimated that there are one billion devices still running Windows 10, and around 40% of these cannot be upgraded to Windows 11. Whilst Microsoft may be looking forward to this, it will potentially create a huge e-waste problem.
The Public Interest Research Group is lobbying Microsoft to extend support beyond 2025 (PIRG recently convinced Google to extend the life of older Chromebooks with similar arguments).
You can read more about this and other IT security issues in the latest Security Now! show notes https://www.grc.com/sn/sn-946-notes.pdf.
But why does it matter now? Well, if you need to replace your Windows 10 devices and want to do it in an orderly way, the costs should be in next year’s budget.
