Meta consider charging for ad-free apps

According to a report in BBC Tech https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c0kglle0p3vo, Meta is considering offering ad-free versions of Facebook and Instagram in the UK, in return for a paid subscription.

It suggests that paying the subscription would provide an ad-free experience and prevent personal data from being tracked. This is already a model in the EU, with subscriptions starting at an equivalent of £5 per month. Several UK newspapers already operate this model too.

This feeds into the ongoing debate about ‘Consent or Pay’ with the ICO issuing guidance in January that users must be presented with a genuine free choice.

When you need to rely on the lawful basis of consent, please ensure that it is UK GDPR-compliant consent. And remember, you can always book a free 25-minute insight call to talk through anything that is unclear.
