Possible hack of 150,000 cameras

As the BBC reported, Verkada are investigating the claims of hackers that they were able to access the data of up to 150,000 security cameras installed in schools, hospitals and businesses.

As yet the scale and the scope of the incident are unclear, though Verkada has been responding in a very clear and open way (here is their latest security update if you might be affected).

Even if we are not directly affected, what can we all learn?

  • Data breaches will happen
  • We need to be ready for when they do
  • Our Policies, Procedures, Training and IT systems need to be kept up to date and ready to support our response

This does not just affect data protection, but intellectual property and commercially sensitive data too.
