The ICO has issued a monetary payment notice, intending to fine Royal Mail £20,000 for an incident from April 2021, where it sent 213,000 email marketing messages to people who had previously opted out. The Royal Mail was promoting its ‘War of the Roses’ special stamp series.
The fine is lower than it might have been, since the Royal Mail reported the incident itself, which it initially said was the result of a technical error involving the interaction between their marketing database and a system that manages customer journeys. Royal Mail later changed this, and acknowledged that the cause was human error.
