Apple blocks AI app updates

Apple is considering blocking an update to an email app that includes AI-language capabilities, according to a report in the Wall Street Journal https://www.wsj.com/articles/apple-blocks-update-of-chatgpt-powered-app-as-concerns-grow-over-ais-potential-harm-c4ca9372

Evidently, Apple has asked the email app developer to set an age restriction for 17 years and older. We understand that the app developer disagrees with this decision, but it does illustrate how the use of AI, and particularly, its ability to generate content that is not appropriate for children, is causing challenges.

As with most new technology, the regulations and best practice can often lag behind, and for-profit can be a powerful motive to use tech in ways which raise questions.

There doesn’t yet seem to be a way to filter large language model (AI) responses by what is true (rather than what is available on the internet), or what is acceptable to say.
