The ICO’s latest newsletter says that they have recently fined 5 companies over £400,000 for making over 750,000 of what they call predatory marketing calls targeting older, vulnerable people.
The ICO also shares the following advice under the heading of ‘Register, Report, Refer!’ and you might want to share this more widely with your staff and volunteers:
If you’re receiving nuisance calls, there are a few things you can do to help stop this predatory marketing.
You can:
- register landlines and mobile numbers with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) free of charge;
- report any nuisance calls you continue to receive to the ICO, using our online nuisance calls reporting tool; and
- refer concerns about fraud and scams to Action Fraud or Police Scotland, concerns about a business’s practices to Trading Standards through Citizens Advice and concerns about silent or abandoned calls to Ofcom.
