Do you have a policy for stories of service users?

Every charity should have ethical policies and procedures for how they collect and tell stores of their service users, when they are used on marketing and fundraising materials.

This is a recommendation in the recent Journal of Philanthropy & Marketing and you can download their report ‘The sweetest songs’ at https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1002/nvsm.1752

They argue for a move away from showing services users purely in the best way to attract most resources to the cause, and towards presenting positive stories to protect their dignity and challenge stereotypes.

This is an important topic and I would encourage you to download and read it, and start talking about it with Fundraising and at Board level.
