UK chooses not to sign AI declaration

At last week’s global AI summit in Paris, dozens of countries including France, China and India, signed an agreement that pledges an open, inclusive and ethical approach to the technology’s development. All well and good, you may think.

But two countries that did not sign are the UK and the US.

The US stance was explained by US Vice President JD Vance who said that AI was an opportunity that the Trump administration would not squander, and said pro-growth AI policies should be prioritised over safety. Yes, he did say that safety had a lower priority than growth in this case.

As for the UK, opinions have varied on whether the UK’s position is the right one. The reason given was that the UK government had not been able to add its name to the agreement because of concerns about national security and global governance.
