140 million volunteering hours went unused last year

The Centre for Economics and Business Research has released a report that suggests over 140 million volunteering hours went unused last year, despite the fact that almost two thirds of companies offered workplace volunteering opportunities to their employees.

You can read the report at the RVS website using the link https://www.royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk/news/volunteering/employee-volunteering-the-untapped-325bn-opportunity-for-the-uk-economy/ and it should prompt you to think of how you can use volunteers more in your charity.

To help us all, the RVS has launched a new volunteering platform, which builds on RVS proven ability to mobilise volunteers during the pandemic, and it’s available for you to advertise for volunteer vacancies. You can find out more using the link above, and the Volunteering Marketplace is around halfway down the page.

Successful volunteer management needs a little planning, but how much more could you achieve with your own volunteering programme.

If you are new to volunteering, the Directory of Social Change has a great book called ‘The Complete Volunteer Management Handbook’ and it is available from https://www.dsc.org.uk/publication/the-complete-volunteer-management-handbook/ for just £35 in paperback or £26 for a downloadable PDF.
